Vrana Lake

Vrana Lake

Somewhere half way from Šibenik to Zadar, squeezed between the sea and the hinterland, is the largest lake in Croatia - Vrana Lake. Its natural, as well as strategic importance, has been appreciated by people from as far back as 2,000 years ago, and today it is conquered by modern adventurers and nature lovers. It is an exceptional home of biodiversity for more than 250 species of birds and as well as being a nature park it is also an ornithological reserve. Apart from the proximity of the main roads, Vrana Lake offers the possibility of hiring mountain bikes and kayaks on site, so there is no middleman between you and enjoying the crystal-clear waters of the lake. The selection of sit-on-top kayaks here is unusually wide so you can also try fishing from a kayak and, who knows, maybe also catch some trophy.

The little harbour of Prosika is the main entrance into the Vrana Lake Nature Park, and when you are there, take a few minutes to walk to the trap for eels built of stone, a memorial to the local agricultural ingeniousness of which there is nothing else similar on the planet. This little harbour is at the same time also the main starting point of the cycling as well as educational trails, so here you will find everything necessary to start your adventure. Immediately at the beginning of the paddling trip awaiting you is the peninsula of Babin Škoj with the secrets hidden under magnificent tombs which date from the third millennium BC, and with further paddling to the tame waters of the lake as some kind of guardians watchtowers will emerge as a reminder of the very lively period of the Middle Ages around the lake itself. During beautiful sunny days, particularly in the early morning or at dusk, the surface of the lake is a great painter’s canvas, full of bright colours which spill into a thousand shades, on which you too can sign your name with the strokes of your paddle.

In the 21st century however everything is about the present moment, so stop for a moment in the middle of the lake, listen carefully to the call of the birds and immerse yourself in the perfect peace. From that moment on things can only get better, therefore paddle off to the little harbour under the hill of Kamenjak, because after a slight walk of an hour to the top waiting for you is an unbelievable view not only of Vrana Lake but also of all the surrounding waters, from where the hundred islets of Kornati will be etched into your memory like a kind of scar, but like that of a real adventurer which will forever make you smile.
