Zrmanja

Zrmanja

Do you want to put your adventurous appetite to the ultimate test, and row down some of the wildest rapids in Croatia, and then with your family and the burbling of a stream row off to the sea? You don’t need to look on a map because all roads lead to the River Zrmanja and its sometimes wild, although mostly tamed beauty. This karst “snake” almost 70 kilometres long furrows its way through limestone rocks through as many as six canyons. Full of contrasts and primaeval beauty with an abundance of flora and fauna, on its way to the Adriatic Sea the Zrmanja will enchant you as not many other rivers.

Alongside the lower course of the river are fertile fields and plains, whilst in the upper parts, particularly in the spring months, it is the kingdom of rapids and therefore a feast of adrenaline, for those who dare to go rafting, because then the Zrmanja offers that most primaeval feeling of nature.

If you are a lover of relaxing rowing tour, don’t despair, because the Zrmanja also has family sections, especially during the summer months.

From the town of Obrovac to the mouth this river is completely navigable and peaceful, and along the river there is a series of fortresses as a monument of the turbulent period which the river has witnessed, whilst the ruins of mills, like the one at Jankovića Buk, are reminiscent of the importance of the river in the lives of the former inhabitants of the region. Rowing down the peaceful section take a break and discover the hidden channels perfect for swimming, and the impressive rocks that surround you and rise up more than 200 metres into the air will fill you with a unique feeling of satisfaction.

One of the most spectacular canyons is the one between Kaštel Žegarski and Ogarov, where by rowing over the clear emerald surface you go between the narrowed cliffs, after which you encounter the waters of the Krupa. With this amazing and hidden stream the Zrmanja forms beautiful semi-circular travertine barriers, this global phenomenon, down which the waters of Visoki Buk, the largest waterfall on the Zrmanja, crash over. After the waterfalls the river leaves the canyon, enters the fertile fields and peacefully flows to Muškovci where the tours usually end. We do not doubt that after this you will want to explore every corner of this river, therefore we recommend a safari of the river lasting several days.

Rowing will be replaced by hiking down the ancient macadam roads, especially along the banks of the Krupa, which will reward you with unprecedented scenery and you will be surprised by some local legends. Want more? Just come!
